Quest 2: Variables and Graphing

Q2P1: Variables and Testable Questions

1. Open up the slide deck attached in the assignment named "Q2P1: Variables and Testable Questions Mini Lesson" in Google Classroom.

2. Watch the video below to learn about Independent and Dependent Variables.

Key Ideas:

  • To find the independent variable, we ask ourselves,  "We did everything the same each trial except the _____ of ____? Always format the independent variable ______ of _______ (blank of blank)

  • To find the dependent variable, we ask ourselves, "At the end of the trial, what did we measure?  Always format the dependent variable _____ of _____ (blank of blank).

3. Watch the video below to learn about Constant Variables.

Key Ideas:

  • Constants: All of the factors we did the same each trial. Always format the constant variables  ______ of ______.

3. Watch the video below to learn about how to write a Testable Question.

Key Ideas:

  • Format a testable question: How does the ____ of ____ affect the ____ of ______? The first blank of blank is the independent variable. The second blank of blank is the dependent variable.

4.  Now it's time to test your knowledge. Watch the video below. Then, open up the slide deck attached in the assignment named "Q2P1: Variables and Testable Questions Mini Lesson" in Google Classroom. Complete Slide 1 based on the scenario explained in the video. Important: ONLY do Slide 1! Do not do slides 2 -4 yet.

5. Watch the video below for feedback on your Slide 1. Before moving onto the next step, you must have your answers on Slide 1 correct. The only way to know if you have them correct is to watch the video below.

6. Complete Slides 2 and 3 on the slide deck on the Variables and Testable Questions Mini Lesson Assignment in Google Classroom. Remember - all variables must be _____ of ______!

7. Do NOT submit your assignment in Google Classroom. Bring your assignment to Mrs. Roehm for a signature and feedback.

Q2P2: Build Puffmobile

IMPORTANT: This assignment should NOT be completed unless you have already completed the Variables and Testable Questions Assignment.

Design Challenge:  Create a blow dryer powered vehicle that can go the fastest over a set distance.  Check out the video below for a visual of what it might look like.

Materials:  One piece of paper, 10 straws, 4 wooden beads, straight pins, scissors

Engineers must follow guidelines (or rules) called constraints. Below are your constraints for this challenge::

  1. You must use all of the straws and paper.  Even if you cut them, you must attach the scraps on the vehicle.

  2. You may cut the straws and paper.  Just remember to attach the scraps!

  3. You may not cut or break the beads.

  4. You must use all 4 beads.

  5. You can only as many straight pins needed, but don’t over use to create a “vehicle of doom”

  6. The vehicle can be powered by a blow dryer.

  7. You cannot use any additional materials - no glue, etc.

  8. The cup is not a material you use to build your Puffmobile.

  9. You will be racing your Puffmobile for 5 official trials (But you can do practice trials before your official trials)

  10. You will be seeing how many tiles your Puffmobile can go in 5 seconds. You may use your phone as a timer. (If you don’t have a phone, just ask Mrs. Roehm for a stop watch.)

  11. You may make tweaks after you test your design, but you may NOT get new materials.

  12. Once you take your paper, that is the paper you get. You can’t get a new one.

  13. Once you cut your straws, those are your straws. You cannot get new straws.

TIPS:

  • Most blow dryers have multiple settings (high, medium, low). You will want the high setting.

  • Where you point the blow dryer will have a huge impact on how fast your Puffmobile travels. Experiment to find the “right place” to point the blow dryer for your experiment.

Once you have read the constraints, go to Mrs. Roehm and ask for your materials.

Once you build your Puffmobile, you can test it and make changes to it. Just ask Mrs Roehm to show you where to do your practice trials.

When you are ready for your official trials, you will record your data in the data table found in the Google Classroom assignment called Q2P3: Puffmobile Lab.

5. Show Mrs. Roehm your completed work for a signature.

Q2P3: Puffmobile Lab Questions

1. Go to Google Classroom and open the Q2P3: Puffmobile Lab Questions Assignment.

2. Record your data in the first row in the data table.

3. Answer the questions on the lab document. Below are some important tips to read first:

- Remember, all variables must be formatted ________ of _________

- For the independent variable, ask yourself, "Everyone in the class did everything the same when building except?"

- For the dependent variable, ask yourself, "At the end of the experiment, what did we measure?"

- For questions 3 and 4 I am asking which variable (the independent or dependent) goes on each axis. Look at the notes page if you don't know.

- Question 5 is asking you "Which constants should we have had that we didn't have? What should all of the groups done exactly the same but didn't?" Remember constants are formatted _____ of _________.

- Don't skip #6! For some reason students often accidentally skip it.

- Be sure to refer to the video for making the graph!

- Remember the format for writing action reaction pairs! (2 objects, 1 force, use the words action and reaction)

4. Show Mrs. Roehm your completed lab document for a signature.

Q2P4: Variable Practice With the Simpsons

1. Go to Google Classroom and open the Q2P4: Variable Practice with the Simpsons Assignment.

2. Remember, all variables (even the constants) must be formatted ______ of ________.

3. Don't forget to end your testable questions with a ?

4. For the independent variable, you ask yourself, "They did everything the same to each group except...."

5. For the dependent variable you ask yourself, "In the end, what did they measure? What data did they collect to know if their experiment worked?"

5. Show Mrs. Roehm your completed lab document for a signature.
